Dark colours predominated in the corridors and common areas on the floors of the seven-storey residential wing. Many visually impaired residents of the retirement and nursing home felt restricted and insecure in their freedom of movement. In addition, the colour scheme impaired the good spatial orientation of the elderly.
During the renovation, estimated at CHF 1.2 million, those responsible paid particular attention to the colour scheme. As older people respond positively to warm pastel shades, light colours in clearly different shades were used. The pensioners were allowed to participate in the choice of the new chairs and curtains, which led to lively discussions in the home.
The residents appreciate the bright, colourful rooms that can now be found throughout the house. Orientation in the home is now much easier for the elderly. They now move more frequently and more safely in the newly designed areas. However, the home management sees a further benefit in the colour scheme: “The colour, which has found its way into everyday life, brings more living, working and quality of life for people in need of care, carers and helpers as well as visitors”.
